What Is Ankylosing Spondylitis and How It Develops

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a form of chronic arthritis in which the joints and ligaments of the spine are usually found in an inflamed condition. This causes a lot of pain to the patients along with muscle stiffness, and if left untreated the joints in the spine and the vertebrae could get fused together, which leads to the loss of flexibility of the spine and, therefore, a reduced ability to carry out several physical movements by the patient. In fact, the term ‘ankylosing’ comes from the Greek word ‘Ankylos’, which means being welded or fusion.

Basic Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis shows symptoms that normally begin at the base of the spine, specifically in the sacroiliac joints, which, join the sacrum with the pelvis area within the human body. Afterward, the swelling usually expands and covers other parts of the body namely the upper part of the back, the chest and shoulders, and along with the neck areas. This disease can also affect the joints in the hips, joints of shoulders, knees, and ankles making the whole area feel heightened pain and serious inflammation.  Other areas of the skeleton where a union of ligaments, cartilages, and tendons is present may also get affected by this disease with time.

Highly similar to what happens in Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis is a progressive disease and will become more problematic with time and without proper treatment. In case of a fusion between different parts of the skeleton and smaller parts of the bones, the physical movement of the patient will virtually become impossible. In this scenario, it is highly recommended that early diagnosis should be done in case any person is at risk of arthritis, regardless of the stage the patient might be in.

It is a chronic inflammatory disease, without a cure, which usually occurs in flare-ups. Its severity varies from person to person, although early diagnosis and proper treatment help prevent and control symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. It is also a systemic disease, that is, other organs of the body such as the eye, or more rarely the heart and lungs, can be affected as well.

Stem cell therapy or regenerative medicinal treatment is gaining ground to become a mainstream healthcare service for the masses all around the world. This modern treatment is offering a pain-free and surgery-free way to recover from the disease. This also means that the stem cell treatment is minimally invasive and does not demand any long recovery time that forces the patient on bed rest. The concept of stem cell or regenerative treatment is to offer patients suffering from chronic diseases, a safe and cost-effective treatment.
